A $5.5B tip to sign a lease πΈ
Plus: the burger chain whose franchisor pays for the pricier ingredients.

Hello, Biz Enthusiasts!
SpaceX needed 20,000 acres to qualify for legal immunity in Louisiana and showed up with 130,000, which is the corporate version of ordering six and a half of something because the menu said one. A SoftBank data center venture handed OpenAI $5.5 billion in warrants just to sign a lease, spending 92% of its own listing on a single tenant. Anthropic is walking into an IPO with a $30 trillion market and a forecast that takes 0.65% of it. Meanwhile sunroofs are shattering at a record clip, which sounds alarming until you notice the glass company earns a 23.0% margin replacing them while the carmakers earn 6.0% building the cars they sit in. The sky really is falling, and someone has already priced the repair. Let's get into it.
Hot Takes π
1. SB Energy Paid OpenAI $5.5B to Become Its Landlord πΈπ’ SB Energy issued OpenAI warrants valued at roughly $5.5 billion to bring it in as anchor tenant, according to draft IPO documents. The venture is targeting a $5 billion to $7 billion listing, so the customer acquisition cost swallows 92% of the money the offering is meant to raise. Turbines are sold out to 2029 and power is scarce, yet a company holding 4.25 gigawatts in Pike County paid the bidder rather than auctioning to one.

2. SpaceX Needed 20,000 Acres. It Showed Up With 130,000 ππ‘οΈ Louisiana passed a law this spring barring nuisance, trespass and inverse-condemnation claims against aerospace operators that own at least 20,000 contiguous acres. Months later, SpaceX unveiled Starbase, Louisiana on 130,000 acres, carrying a commitment of at least $100 billion and 3,000 direct jobs. Six and a half times the minimum is not a rounding error, and the land reached the company through an ExxonMobil pollution settlement.

3. Anthropic Claims a $30 Trillion Market. It Wants 0.65% ππ― Anthropic is expected to tell IPO investors its opportunity tops $30 trillion, beating the $28.5 trillion SpaceX claimed back in May. Its own internal forecast puts 2028 revenue at $190 billion to $200 billion, which works out to 0.65% of the market it is claiming. A number that large is not a growth argument. It is a denominator, and denominators have a job.

4. Steak 'n Shake Switched to Beef Tallow. The Contract Is Why ππ§ Same-store sales rose 13.8% in the June quarter after the chain moved to beef tallow, grass-fed beef and cane-sugar Coke. The part nobody read sits in the 10-Q: Steak 'n Shake charges operators up to 15% of sales, then takes half of whatever profit is left. McDonald's, Burger King and Domino's absorb none of a system-wide cost increase, and one franchisee now changes fryer oil about 52 times a year instead of 30.

5. An App That Charges Nothing Just Raised $250M π€π Instinct closed a $250 million Series B at a $2.5 billion valuation, co-led by Index Ventures and Benchmark, on a product that costs nothing, is invite-only and has never named a business model. Read the task list instead of the funding announcement: booking a handyman, shopping homeowners insurance, finding an apartment, buying a house. Those are the four highest-fee transactions in American life, and about $3,000 of commission rides on the biggest one.
